EVERY MAN HIS OWN GARDENER - JOHN HALSHAM - 1904
Enjoyable for 'dipping' in and for a sustained read.
Interesting spotlight on a moment in gardening history:-
Information - how to construct a hotbed.
Opinion - that half the troubles of gardeners are caused by gamekeepers.
Advice - check on wind direction before sweeping leaves.
Warnings - don't use 'The Abomination that goes by the name of "London Manure," the mixture of sweepings of streets and mews with all sorts of dusthole garbage . . . a percentage of old clothes, dead cats and dogs, and crockery . . . '
Apprehension - how will the chemical deposits from newly introduced motor cars affect gardening?
Folk names - 'Devils Guts' for the roots of bindweed and ground elder.
And women - encouraged to garden (at last!). (Though they may find digging heavy clay a bit of a challenge.)
If you can get it - you'll love it.
